Startup FAQs
How much time does it take?
Inspections occur every 7–14 days during warm months.
Depending on the size of your apiary, harvest can take a full day's work
Do I need a lot of space?
No. Bees can be kept in backyards, on rooftops, or in urban areas, provided they have a water source and a sunny,, protected location. If you're in an HOA, best to check!
How much does it cost?
Key First-Year Startup Costs
Bees: $175-$300 for a package or nucleus colony (nuc).
Hive Equipment: $300-$500 for unassembled/assembled hives (brood chambers, supers, frames).
Protective Gear: $75–$200 for a suit/jacket, gloves, and veil.
Essential Tools: $75–$100 for a smoker, hive tool, and bee brush.
How many hives should I start out with?
Start with two. If one hive dies or struggles, you can use resources from the strong hive to save it.
What equipment is essential?
Protective Gear: A bee suit or jacket with a veil.
Hive Tools: Essential for prying apart boxes and frames.
Smoker: Used to calm bees by covering alarm pheromones.
Hive Components: Bottom board, deep hive bodies, frames, inner cover, and telescoping cover.
What is the best way to get bees?
Nuc (Nucleus Colony): (Recommended for beginners)
An established 5-frame colony. They are more expensive but easier for beginners because they already have a laying queen, food, and brood.Package Bees: 3 pounds of bees in a box with a queen. They require more feeding initially.
When should I buy?
Spring - it is generally the best time to get started, with all things considered. You'll have 3 seasons to get them established before Winter. Nucs typically are not sold after June.
